Chhattisgarh tops survey, scores 95% in midday meal during Covid crisis
Chhattisgarh has performed best among five states in the country in reaching out to maximum number of children to deliver mid-day meals despite the lockdown period, reveals a study conducted by Oxfam India. Over 90 percent of children in Chhattisgarh received their right to mid-day meal against 35 percent kids deprived of their mid-day meals.
Since the schools were ordered shut as soon as the pandemic hit the country, it became a challenge to cater to needs of lakhs of students who were dependent on mid-day meal (MDM) for nutritious food.
As soon as the schools and Aanganwadi centres were closed in the month of March, Chhattisgarh government decided that it would continue serving food to children in form of dry ration.
The study was done in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand—and the survey shows that 35% of children did not receive their mid-day meals. Of the remaining 65%, only 8% received cooked meals while 53% received dry rations and 4% received money in lieu of the MDM,” said the status report.
The Oxfam India has recommended that the government must ensure safe, home delivery of cooked meals/dry rations under the mid-day meal scheme, ensure that the access is unconditional.
