DMPQ- Why do virtues like compassion and empathy are considered important virtues for civil servants?

Empathy is the ability of a person to put himself in other person’s shoes and feel what he might be feeling. On the other hand, Compassion is to feel about a person and work for his betterment. Civil servants are part of the executive branch of government and are supposed to act as a bridge between the classes and the masses. Empathy and compassion towards weaker section of society is the prerequisite to work for their development and upliftment. A civil servant should watch from a prism of empathy and responsibility to understand what is important, what is necessary and what a pure wastage is. Moreover, understanding people for whom you work, is the first step to keep aside your personal interests and working in the larger realm of public interests.
